Spend a Fun-Filled Day at This Maritime Museum and Sailing Center Near Virginia Beach

Found along the waterfront in downtown Norfolk, Nauticus is a fun maritime center where visitors come to learn about the "maritime environment, industry, and the military." It offers much to see and do, from watching films to exploring one of the largest battleships ever built by the United States Navy. Here is some of what the maritime museum has to offer near our apartments in Virginia Beach:

Sailing Courses

Sail Nauticus is a community sailing program that makes it easy for everyone to enjoy time on the water. The First Sail course offers a two-hour introduction to sailing along the Elizabeth River. An experienced instructor will teach you the basics in a safe and relaxed setting. For a more in-depth program, try the Learn to Sail classes.

Battleship Wisconsin

Named in honor of the thirtieth state, the Battleship Wisconsin is one of the last battleships built by the United States Navy. She departed Norfolk in 1944 bound for the British Isles. Today, you can explore the deck and learn about the ship's storied history. For a behind-the-scenes look, take a guided tour. The experts will show you areas not open to the public.

Shark Experience

Learn about white-spotted bamboo sharks. These slender creatures feature a color pattern of white or bluish spots, saddles, and dark bands on a light background. In the wild, they prefer inshore, shallow tropical reefs. White-spotted bamboo sharks are nocturnal, and feast on shrimp, crabs, and small fish. The exhibit also includes epaulette sharks. Best of all, you'll discover why you don't need to be afraid of either species.

After exploring this amazing maritime museum, enjoy poke for dinner at a restaurant in Virginia Beach. If you would like to become a resident of The Apartments at Spence Crossing, please contact us.
