Visit These Historical Spots in the Virginia Beach Area

Our apartments near Tidewater Community College are in close proximity to educational opportunities of all kinds. Check out one of these nearby spots to get your educational fix:

Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum

There's a lot to learn here at the historic De Witt cottage. You can spend hours in this interesting space taking in numerous wildfowl statues, carvings, and other art. If you're interested in learning how to carve something on your own, you'll benefit from the friendly expertise of the in-house artisans. The house itself is interesting, too, as the only early example of a brick cottage on the Virginia Beach oceanfront. Admission is free, although a $2.00 donation is appreciated.

Cape Henry Lighthouse

This lighthouse is located on a military base. Everyone above age 16 who wishes to enter will need to show a photo ID. The Cape Henry lighthouse has an amazing story, as it was the first federally-funded public works project of the government. Completed in 1792, the lighthouse was in operational use for over a century. Now it stands as a monument open to visitors seven days a week. Visitors can climb inside the structure and enjoy a firsthand look into the past.

The Thoroughgood House

This National Historic Landmark is open for free tours. Built during the early eighteenth century, it is currently surrounded by a beautiful English garden. The Education Center here tells the early story of Princess Anne County, so you'll find plenty to learn about the origins of our locality. You'll enjoy being immersed in history here, climbing the impressive staircase and roaming amongst the elaborate wainscoting.

If you'd like to help visitors to the area learn more about history, consider donating your time to become a museum volunteer. You'll meet plenty of new people as you help to preserve important knowledge. At the end of the day, you'll enjoy relaxing at The Apartments at Spence Crossing. Contact us for more information, and we'll give you the tour!
