Dog Friendly Things to Do in Virginia Beach Near Spence Crossing

At The Apartments at Spence Crossing, we know pets are more than just animals—they’re family. And when the summer sun is out in full force, there’s no better time to explore all that Virginia Beach has to offer with your four-legged friend. Whether you're looking for a new walking trail, a pup-friendly patio, or a shady park to relax in, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the season together. All just a short drive or walk from your front door!

🐾 Take a Scenic Stroll Together

Start your day with a peaceful morning walk at Stumpy Lake Natural Area, just minutes from Spence Crossing. This quiet, wooded space features a shaded 1.65-mile nature trail perfect for leashed dogs. The mix of waterfront views and wildlife sightings will keep both of you engaged without overheating during those hot summer mornings.

Another nearby option is Mount Trashmore Park, one of Virginia Beach’s most iconic green spaces. The expansive walking paths, open fields, and designated pet areas make it a great place to exercise and socialize for dogs and humans alike.

🐶 Cool Off at a Dog-Friendly Café

After a long walk, treat yourself and your pup to a refreshing break at a local café with outdoor seating. Three Ships Coffee, located in the ViBe Creative District, is a local favorite with shaded patio spots where pups are welcome. Or stop by Java Surf Café near the Oceanfront, where your furry companion can relax by your side while you enjoy a cold brew or smoothie.

Many local spots offer water bowls and pup cups; just ask the staff and they’re usually happy to accommodate. A little caffeine for you, a cool sip for them, and you’re both recharged for your next adventure!

🐕 Find Off-Leash Freedom

Looking for a little off-leash playtime? Head to the Marshview Dog Park, where your pup can run, sniff, and meet new friends in a secure, shaded space. It’s divided into sections for large and small dogs, so all breeds can enjoy safely. And there’s plenty of nearby wooded trails to stretch your legs and enjoy nature.

You can also check out the Bayville Farms Dog Park, which is a bit further north but features agility equipment and plenty of room to roam. Plus, with tennis courts, shuffleboard, disc golf, playgrounds, and more, there’s plenty for the whole family to enjoy.

🍔 Dine Out Without Leaving Your Pup Behind

Virginia Beach is full of pet-friendly restaurants with patios that welcome well-behaved dogs.

One favorite to try near Spence Crossing includes Hair of the Dog Eatery, which welcomes pets on their patio. They serve up great breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Their menu is extensive, including great omelettes, biscuits, and burgers. Don’t be surprised if your dog tries to steal a sweet potato fry or two!

Another standout is Wasserhund Brewing Company, a local favorite inspired by German beer and dog lovers alike. In fact, “Wasserhund” translates to “water dog!” Their inviting outdoor seating area is dog-friendly, and their menu of craft brews and gourmet pizzas makes it a great spot for a casual night out with your canine companion by your side. Plus, they even have special treats for your dog including Dog Beer and their signature Pup-Pie: pizza dough topped with peanut butter and your choice of cheese, chicken or apple slices.

Or if you're looking for the ultimate dog-friendly hangout, Pups and Pints is a must-visit spot in Virginia Beach. Just a short drive from Spence Crossing, this unique venue combines a craft beer bar with an expansive off-leash dog park, making it the perfect place for both humans and pups to socialize. Whether you're catching up with friends or letting your dog burn off some energy, you’ll find the atmosphere laid-back, friendly, and full of tail wags.

Before heading out, check hours and patio policies (especially on busy weekends), but more often than not, you'll find your furry friend is just as welcome as you are in many Virginia Beach venues.
