January is the perfect time of year to start new habits, clear out what you don’t need, and organize your home. When it comes to decluttering, storage is the key to success. And at the Apartments at Spence Crossing, we have done our best to make sure our residents have enough space to store what they need.
The first step of any organization project is to pare down what you have. When it comes to clothing and household items, if you haven’t used it or worn it in the past year, it’s probably safe to say you no longer need it. By reducing your clutter, you can more accurately determine what your storage needs are.
The next step is looking at your items for each room and determining what is frequently used and what is not. Frequently used items need to remain easily accessible. For instance, if you use your toaster every day, don’t store it in the pantry. Leave it plugged in on the countertop so that it’s easy to get to. Similarly, if you only use your food processor for special occasions, store it on a high shelf or in the pantry so it’s out of the way most of the time. Take this approach to all your major storage areas: your kitchen, your laundry room, and your closets.
Once you’ve determined the essentials for each space, there are organizers you can add to your space to make it even more efficient. For example, you can add plastic or metal risers to your kitchen cabinets to double your cabinet space. Rather than stacking your bowls on top of your plates (making your plates harder to access), add a riser over your plates so that bowls can rest on that instead.
When it comes to your closet, there are so many ways you can make the space fit your needs. Invest in space-saving hangers. Narrow velvet hangers are a great way to increase storage for hanging items, compared to traditional plastic hangers, which are thicker and take up more room. The Apartments at Spence Crossing feature shelving built in to the bedroom closets, so be sure to make the most of it! Bins can help you keep smaller items organized on a shelf. For example, handbags can be neatly lined up in a bin rather than hung on a coat rack. Folded items like t-shirts or sweaters can be stacked tall in a bin without toppling over. Storing shoes in boxes not only makes them easier to stack and store, it keeps them from getting dusty.
The laundry rooms at the Apartments at Spence Crossing include an in-unit washer and dryer, and they are spacious enough to be multi-use. Consider an over-the-door storage rack for odds and ends like gift wrap or beach bag essentials like sunscreen, pool toys and swimsuits. A rolling cart for craft supplies or party supplies keeps them out of the way when not in use. There’s even room for a bike or a surfboard if you wanted to hang it on the wall!
