The Tot Lot Playground at Spence Crossing Apartments: Nurturing Childhood Development

The residents of The Apartments at Spence Crossing love the community, and our amenities are unparalleled. Residents especially enjoy our unique outdoor spaces for children. It’s a great place to have fun and unwind, but The Tot Lot playground at Spence Crossing can also be an important tool in helping your child grow and learn.

Many young families choose to live in Virginia Beach because of the highly-rated public school system, and several of our residents have children who attend Landstown Elementary School. But before your children head off to school, they can spend many happy hours playing in the Tot Lot. Our gated playground has an engaging jungle gym, complete with monkey bars and a slide. The soft, rubberized turf is a welcome playing surface (and it also means that no one will bring pebbles or mulch back home in their shoes).

Physical activity is so important for a child’s development. Your little ones will build strength, coordination, and confidence each time they visit the Tot Lot. Early childhood development experts recommend that toddlers get at least three hours of physical activity every day. No one expects your child to hit the weight room or the treadmill. Appropriate exercise for toddlers is physical play like walking, climbing, jumping, and digging. Seeing and doing is physically beneficial, and it builds connections in a child’s brain for information about spatial reasoning and cause and effect. The Tot Lot at Spence Crossing Apartments is the perfect place for children to not only burn off some of that energy, but it will help them reach developmental milestones.

When playing with other children on the playground, your child will hone social skills that can further their development. Making friends, sharing, and taking turns teaches patience, kindness, and fellowship. Children become better at regulating their emotions with practice, and meeting friends at the Tot Lot is a wonderful opportunity to practice what they’ve learned about being kind to one another.

Adding structure to a toddler’s day helps you and them. If you can include a visit to the park every day around the same time, those patterns will help your child develop a sense of comfort and security. Creating a routine around a visit to the Tot Lot before or after dinner is something to look forward to each evening, and could help your child wind down when the day is done. The Tot Lot is situated at the edge of the neighborhood, alongside Princess Anne Road (next to The Bark Park). It’s a convenient stroll no matter where in Spence Crossing you reside.
